The 2013 Pocono IndyCar 400 took place on July 7th at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond , Pennsylvania , United States and was the eleventh race of the 2013 IndyCar Series .
Reports
background
After the Iowa Corn Indy 250 , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' standings with 9 points on Ryan Hunter-Reay and 55 points on Marco Andretti .
After a break of 24 years, there was another IndyCar race on the Pocono Raceway . The race counted towards the Triple Crown with the Indianapolis 500 2013 and the MAVTV 500 2013 . A driver who won all three races would have received a $ 1 million reward. There is a reward of $ 250,000 for two wins. Tony Kanaan was the winner of the Indianapolis 500. In all Triple Crown races, the start of the race was carried out in a three-man formation. As usual, the restarts only took place in a single file formation.
There were two driver changes before this race. Ryan Briscoe replaced Oriol Servià at Panther Racing . He had missed the previous race due to a scheduling conflict with the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours . Since Briscoe also took part in a race of the American Le Mans Series that weekend , he only got into the action on race day and did not qualify. Pippa Mann replaced Ana Beatriz at Dale Coyne Racing and returned to the racing cockpit after a two-race break.
There was no former winner in this race.
training
In the week before the Pocono IndyCar 400, test drives took place on the Pocono Raceway, so there was only one practice session before qualifying. Andretti achieved the fastest lap ahead of Kanaan and Charlie Kimball .
Qualifying
The qualifying was held in the individual time trial. Each pilot drove two fast laps in a row. The average speed achieved in the process decided the order of the starting grid.
Andretti set the fastest time ahead of his teammates Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe . He was then enthusiastic about the route, which is located near Nazareth , the family seat of the Andrettis. EJ Viso , the fourth Andretti driver, had an accident in the first corner on the second lap of his qualifying attempt. He was unharmed. Alex Tagliani also had an accident in the first corner . He was also unharmed. In addition, Briscoe did not take part in qualifying as planned. The first six places were occupied by Chevrolet drivers, Scott Dixon was the best Honda driver as seventh .
For the first time since the Indianapolis 500 in 1998 , there was a front row of three vehicles on a team.
Dixon, Dario Franchitti , Mann, Justin Wilson , Viso and Tagliani were each moved ten positions back due to premature engine changes.
Final training
In the final training, Andretti was again the fastest. Takuma Satō was second, Hinchcliffe third.
run
On the first lap, Hinchcliffe lost control of his vehicle in the first corner and hit the lane backwards. This triggered a yellow phase. In the caution phase, Sebastian Saavedra also retired with technical problems.
Andretti kept the lead at the restart, Hunter-Reay lost second place to Kanaan. On lap 30, Andretti began the phase of the first pit stops under the green flag. As a result, he briefly lost the lead to Kanaan, Will Power and Kimball, until he regained it five laps later. At the pits, Hunter-Reay and Sato passed Kanaan and took over from Andretti. During the first pit stop, Tristan Vautier spun in the pit lane and stalled his vehicle. This left him two laps behind.
On the 61st lap Andretti made his second pit stop, which temporarily gave Kanaan the lead, but Kanaan lost it after his stop. At the same time as Andretti, Hunter-Reay and Satō also pitted. Satō drove too fast into the pit lane and thus into the rear of Hunter-Reay's vehicle, which was pushed into the pit wall. Satō retired immediately, Hunter-Reay resumed the race behind, but gave up prematurely after 60 more laps. Satō was later given suspended sentences for the next five races. The accident triggered a yellow phase in which Kanaan took the lead again. Behind him were Andretti, Castroneves, Simon Pagenaud , Power, Dixon, Kimball and Franchitti. The three Ganassi drivers got along better and better with their vehicle during this racing phase.
At the restart, Andretti took the lead again from Kanaan. Beginning in the third pit stop phase but on lap 96, it became clear that the Ganassi drivers had better fuel management and stayed outside longer. Andretti pitted first and didn't have a good stop. Kanaan briefly took the lead and handed it over to Dixon after his stop, who pitted four laps after Andretti and kept the lead. On lap 107, Dixon was overtaken on the Canaan track. In the process, Kanaan damaged his front wing, so that he pitted shortly afterwards for a repair stop. Power and Andretti also passed Dixon. Power led the race for a short time before Andretti took the lead again.
The race began to be tactical a little later. Since the petrol window was 30 laps, all pilots tried to stay on the track as long as possible and to complete their last stop as late as possible. Andretti was overtaken by Power and Dixon when it came to saving fuel. The top 10 moved closer together and were in this phase within five seconds. In the 127th lap, Andretti pitted first. A little later Power followed, which briefly went to Kimball. After all the drivers were in the pits, the three Ganassi drivers, led by Dixon, were in the first three places. Fourth place went to Pagenaud, who also used a Honda engine. The Honda engines proved to be more fuel efficient than the Chevrolet engines in this race.
In the closing stages, Andretti, who was the fastest in all training sessions, lost further position and fell back to tenth place. Pagenaud also lost places in the final phase. Viso gave up the race prematurely, several laps behind.
Dixon finally won an IndyCar race for the 30th time and achieved Ganassi's first win of the season, which was also the 100th Ganassi win ever. Dixon was the eighth winner in the eleventh race. As Kimball and Franchitti completed the podium, Ganassi's first triple victory came about. Ganassi had focused on the race with the vehicle set-up and thus a vehicle that has got better and better in the race. Power was the best Chevrolet driver as fourth and described the result as a good oval result. Josef Newgarden came in fifth for the second time in the top five. Pagenaud, Wilson, Castroneves, Ed Carpenter and Andretti completed the top 10. Andretti rolled straight after crossing the finish line without fuel.
For the first time since the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma 2011 , a team managed to take the top three places. Back then, Penske was in the top three positions with Power, Castroneves and Briscoe. The only triple crown race up to this point where the first three places were achieved by a team was the 1979 California 500 , in which Penske was successful with Bobby Unser , Rick Mears and Mario Andretti .
Honda won the 200th IndyCar race in the Pocono IndyCar 400.
The first three positions in the drivers' championship remained unchanged. Castroneves extended his lead over Hunter-Reay.
