Nazareth is a city in Northampton County in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States .
The name Nazareth goes back to the biblical city of the same name and, like Bethlehem , Emmaus and Allentown, belongs to cities in the Lehigh Valley region whose names have Christian origins.
history
The first settlement goes back to a founding of members of the Moravian Brethren - also called Moravian Indians in the United States - in 1740. Under the leadership of the preacher George Whitefield , a large settlement was to be built on an area of 20 km². But poor soil conditions and bad weather delayed the erection of fortified houses. It wasn't until 1743 that the first 32 settlers came from Europe. But then a real influx of people began, especially of members of the religious community.
By the middle of the 19th century, the city developed into a center of German settlement activity in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Dutch were soon joined by immigrant families from Switzerland and Alsace .
Through the settlement activity, especially by Protestant faith groups, Nazareth became an ecclesiastical center, which was reflected in many church buildings for religious communities with a Lutheran background.
At the end of the 19th century, great industrial development began in eastern Pennsylvania, which also fully embraced Nazareth.
