Marco Michael Andretti (born March 13, 1987 in Nazareth , Pennsylvania ) is an American automobile racing driver . He is a grandson of Formula 1 world champion Mario Andretti and a son of IndyCar champion Michael Andretti . Since 2006 he has been competing for Andretti Autosport in the IndyCar Series . His best overall placement in this series was fifth in 2013.

Career

Like most motorsport enthusiasts , Marco Andretti began his career in karting , where he was active from 1997 to 2002. He also took part in other kart races from time to time. In 2003 Andretti made his first experiences in formula racing and became champion of the Formula Dodge Eastern Championship . He also took part in two races in the Formula Dodge National Championship . In 2004 he won the championship titles of the Skip Barber Southern Regional Series , the national Skip Barber Championship and the Formula TR Pro Series FR 1600 . In 2005 he moved to the Star Mazda Series and finished fifth overall. It was more successful for him in the IRL Infinity Pro . Although he only finished tenth overall, he only started 6 of 14 races and won three of them.

In 2006 he moved to the IndyCar Series for Andretti Green Racing , his father Michael's team . With his start at the season opener in Homestead , he became the youngest driver of all time to start in this series. At the Indianapolis 500 2006, in which his father also took part, Andretti almost achieved the sensation of taking his first victory in his third oval race. Andretti finished second after being overtaken by Sam Hornish junior 150 meters from the finish line . His father came third. In the penultimate race in Sonoma , Andretti won his first IndyCar race ahead of his teammate Dario Franchitti . This made him the youngest winner in the IndyCar Series at the age of 19. At the end of the season he finished seventh overall and he became the best newcomer of the season. At the end of the year, Andretti had the opportunity to test a Formula 1 car for Honda on December 15th . The next year, on February 7th and 8th, 2007, he again completed Formula 1 test drives for Honda.

2007 Andretti played his second season in the IndyCar Series. He didn't win this season and his best results were two second places. At the end of the season he finished eleventh overall. At the Indianapolis 500, in which he had failed, he started again with his father. In 2008 Andretti achieved his best result at the season opener in Homestead, where he finished second. He was also on the podium in three other races, including the Indy 500, and improved to seventh place in the championship at the end of the season. In addition, Andretti took part in several ALMS races in 2007 and 2008 . After taking part in ten races of the A1GP series for the US team in the winter of 2008/2009 and finishing third on the podium in one race, he contested his fourth season in the IndyCar Series in 2009 . Andretti again did not build on the performance from his first season and finished eighth overall with fourth place as the best result.

In 2010 Andretti started again for his father's team, which had been renamed Andretti Autosport before the season . At the third race of the season in Birmingham, Alabama , Andretti led the race for most laps, as he had relied on a different strategy, he had to go back to the pits shortly before the end to refuel, lost the lead and finished fifth. At the traditional Indianapolis 500, Andretti was subsequently awarded third place after being overtaken by some pilots in a yellow phase. At the end of the season he finished eighth overall with two further third places. He also made his debut at the Le Mans 24-hour race that year . In 2011 Andretti completed another season for Andretti Autosport. At the Iowa Speedway , he achieved a win after 79 races without a win, which was his first on an oval course. Within the team he had to admit defeat Ryan Hunter-Reay with 337 to 347 points and ended the season for the third time in a row in eighth place in the overall standings.

For the 2012 season , Andretti Autosport received a new engine partner, Chevrolet . At the Indianapolis 500 he achieved the most laps in the lead and drove the fastest lap. In the final phase, however, he retired after an accident. At the ninth race in Newton , he achieved his first podium finish of the season with a second place, which was also his first top 10 finish. Andretti finished the season in 16th place and was beaten internally by his two teammates. Hunter-Reay was champion, James Hinchcliffe eighth. In 2013 Andretti competed for the family racing team again. He changed his starting number from 26 to 25 and worked on his driving style before the season. At the season opener in Saint Petersburg , he already achieved a podium finish with a third place. In São Paulo he repeated this result. No further podium finishes followed during the season. However, he achieved two pole positions. Firstly at the Milwaukee IndyFest , which he gave up with electronics problems. On the other hand, at the race in Pocono . There he also led every training session. In the race he got the most lead laps, but fell back to tenth place because his fuel consumption was too high. Andretti did not finish within the top ten only four times. Although he did not win a race, in contrast to two of his teammates, Hunter-Reay and Hinchcliffe, Andretti finished the season as the best Andretti driver in fifth place overall. This was his best overall placement in the IndyCar Series to date.

In 2014 Andretti completed its ninth IndyCar season for Andretti Autosport, which got their engines again from Honda . In the first five races he made it onto the podium twice. He finished second in Birmingham and third at the Indianapolis 500 . He did not get any further podium placements in the season. Andretti finished the season in ninth place overall. He was internally defeated by his teammates Hunter-Reay and Carlos Muñoz , but prevailed against Hinchcliffe. At the beginning of 2015 , Andretti initially took part in a race in the FIA Formula E championship for the family racing team. He then competed in the IndyCar Series for Andretti Autosport in 2015 . With a second place in Detroit and a third place in Fontana , he achieved two podium finishes. As in the previous year, he was ninth overall. With 429 to 436 points he was second-best Andretti driver behind Hunter-Reay. In 2016 , Andretti stayed for Andretti Autosport in the IndyCar Series for another year. Eighth place in Sonoma was his best result. As the worst driver of his team, he reached 16th place overall.
