The 2015 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach took place on April 19 at the Long Beach Grand Prix Circuit in Long Beach , California , United States and was the third race of the 2015 IndyCar Series . It was the 41st Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Reports

background

After the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana , Juan Pablo Montoya led the drivers' standings with ten points ahead of Hélio Castroneves and with 14 points ahead of Will Power .

The aero kits were improved again at the request of the IndyCar race management. Chevrolet removed the telescopic winglets on the front wing. Honda reinforced the rear wheel fairing again.

There were three changes in the starting field. Andretti Autosport no longer used an additional fourth vehicle for Simona de Silvestro and reduced the line-up to three vehicles. Sage Karam has been replaced by Sebastián Saavedra at Chip Ganassi Racing . The two shared the vehicle for the next season, with Saavedra taking over the car in a total of four races. After two years as a full-time pilot for 2015, Saavedra had not received a cockpit for a full season. Dale Coyne Racing replaced Carlos Huertas with Rocky Moran Jr. for this Grand Prix . who last took part in a formula race in 2005 and wanted to debut in the IndyCar Series. However, since he injured himself in practice, Conor Daly took over the cockpit for the rest of the race weekend. Daly was last active at the Indianapolis 500 2013 in the IndyCar Series.

With Sébastien Bourdais (three times), Power (twice), Montoya, Castroneves, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Takuma Satō (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

There were three training sessions lasting 45 minutes each. Scott Dixon set the fastest time in the first practice session ahead of teammates Tony Kanaan and Hunter-Reay. Both Dale Coyne pilots were at the bottom of the field, with debutant Moran distancing his teammate Dracone more than a second. The first training went without a break.

In the second training session there was a Penske three-fold tour with power in front of Simon Pagenaud and Castroneves. There was an interruption after Carlos Muñoz collided with Moran in the first corner. Moran, who was not to blame for the incident, hit the tire wall. Moran broke his left thumb and was injured for the rest of the race weekend.

In the third training session, Daly took over the Dale-Coyne cockpit from Moran. Once again, three Penske drivers led the field: Pagenaud in front of Castroneves and Power. Practice was interrupted once after Jack Hawksworth spun in the middle of the track. Stefano Coletti touched the wall in the last corner, but drove the damaged vehicle back to the pits, so there was no interruption here.

Qualifying

The first part of the qualifying was held in two groups according to the usual qualifying system for street courses. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group, Kanaan drove the fastest lap, in the second group Montoya was the fastest driver. The first section of the second group was canceled after Coletti crashed into the wall in the fifth corner. As a result, among other things, Power was eliminated, who had not previously achieved a sufficiently fast time. Coletti lost the fastest times so that he could not make it into the second section and instead fell back to the bottom of the field.

In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Pagenaud achieved the fastest lap time. Alongside him, Josef Newgarden , Castroneves, Montoya, Dixon and Hunter-Reay made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six.

In the third part, Castroneves finally set the fastest time and achieved pole position in front of his teammates Montoya and Dixon. Castroneves drove the fastest lap time ever achieved on this track configuration. It was Castroneve's 42nd IndyCar Pole, with whom he was fourth on the all-time IndyCar Pole leaderboard at the time.

Final training

In the final training session on the Sunday before the race, Newgarden set the fastest lap ahead of Pagenaud and Gabby Chaves .

run

At the start, Castroneves kept the lead. Dixon passed Montoya into second position. A yellow phase began in the fifth lap, as there were debris in the ninth corner. It remained the only caution phase after there had been five and six caution phases in the previous two races. In the caution phase, some drivers pitted on lap seven. This left Luca Filippi stand in the pit lane entrance. When trying to pass him, Power stalled his engine. Both drivers continued, but dropped out of the lead lap.

In the 29th round, Castroneves pitted and briefly gave the lead to Hawksworth. After his stop, Castroneves had to wait briefly for Kanaan, who turned into the pits before him, so that his stop was delayed a little. As a result, he fell behind Dixon, who took the lead after a Hawksworth pit stop and then safely led the race. In the 53rd lap he pitted and temporarily lost the lead to Castroneves and Bourdais. For third place, a duel between the Penske drivers Montoya and Pagenaud developed in the final phase, which enabled Kanaan and Bourdais to catch up. There was no change in position in this group.

Thus Dixon achieved his first win of the season before Castroneves. It was Dixon's first win at Long Beach. With his 36th IndyCar victory, he and Bobby Unser immediately moved to fifth place on the all-time best list. In addition, after Unser, Emerson Fittipaldi and Castroneves, Dixon became the fourth IndyCar driver to win at least one IndyCar race in eleven consecutive years. Montoya was third ahead of Pagenaud, Kanaan, Bourdais and Newgarden. Marco Andretti was the best Honda rider in eighth place. Muñoz and Saavedra completed the top 10. At the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach 2015, the first 19 drivers crossed the finish line in the lead lap. In addition, another new record was set with 23 drivers who reached the finish.

In the drivers' championship, Montoya stayed ahead of Castroneves. Canaan took third place.
