Charlie Kimball (born February 20, 1985 in Chertsey , United Kingdom ) is an American racing driver . He competed for Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar Series from 2011 to 2016 .

Career

Kimball began his motorsport career in 1997 in karting , which he practiced until 2001. In 2002 he made in the US Formula Dodge his first experience in Formula racing and in 2003 took on the US F2000 National Championship , the third overall took part. After finishing third in the British Formula Ford winter championship in winter , Kimball competed in the British Formula Ford in 2004 and finished fourth in the overall standings with two wins. He also took part in two New Zealand Formula Ford races, where he finished 18.

In 2005 Kimball moved to the British Formula 3 championship at Carlin Motorsport . With five wins and a total of 13 podium finishes, he won the runner-up title in this series behind Álvaro Parente . In 2006 Kimball switched to Signature Plus in the Formula 3 Euro Series . He did not succeed in the new series to build on the successes from the previous season, and he finished eleventh overall with a win as the best result. So he was better than the future champions of the Euro Series Romain Grosjean , who was one of Kimball's teammates in the 2006 season.

In 2007 Kimball started for Victory Engineering in the Formula Renault 3.5 . After seven race weekends he had to end the season for health reasons because he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes . At the end of the season he finished 24th overall. In 2008 Kimball returned to the Formula 3 Euro Series. Starting for the Prema Powerteam , he made a good start to the new season with a second place in the first race. Nevertheless, after three race weekends he was replaced by Stefano Coletti , as he could no longer pay for his racing cockpit. At the end of the year he took part in a race weekend of the 2008/2009 A1GP season for the US team .

In 2009 Kimball returned to the United States and started for Team PBIR in the Indy Lights . With a fourth place as the best result, he finished tenth overall at the end of the season. In 2010 Kimball switched to the AFS Racing / Andretti Autosport team , which had won the drivers' title with JR Hildebrand in the preseason . With four second places as the best results, he finished fourth in the overall standings as the best US pilot at the end of the season.

In 2011 , Kimball moved to Chip Ganassi Racing and completed his first season in the IndyCar Series . He competed for a satellite team from the racing team. While his teammates achieved podium finishes and Dario Franchitti also won the championship, Kimball finished the season with a ninth place as the best result in 19th place overall. In 2012 Kimball started again for Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar Series. Kimball achieved his first IndyCar podium finish with a second place at the Honda Indy Toronto . At the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, Kimball was sidelined due to an injury after suffering a hand injury during tests on the track the week before. He finished the season as the worst Ganassi pilot in 19th place. In 2013 , Kimball stayed with Ganassi in the IndyCar Series. At the second race in Birmingham Kimball led the race in the meantime and finished it in fourth place. After three more top 10 finishes in the next eight races, Kimball finished second in Long Pond behind his teammate Scott Dixon . He scored his first IndyCar win three races later at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio . He became the first diabetic to win an IndyCar race. He improved to ninth place overall while Dixon won the championship. In addition, Kimball took part in the 24-hour race of Daytona in the Rolex Sports Car Series for his team . He started in a Riley - BMW and won the race together with his teammates Juan Pablo Montoya , Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas .

In 2014 , Kimball contested his fourth IndyCar season for Chip Ganassi Racing. A third place in Detroit was his only podium finish. Kimball was internally defeated by his three teammates and finished the season in 14th place in the championship. In 2015 Kimball started again for Ganassi in the IndyCar Series. While his teammate Dixon won the championship title, Kimball improved to twelfth overall. Two third places at the Indianapolis 500 and Sonoma were his best results. He also took part in a race in the United SportsCar Championship (USCC). In 2016 , Kimball stayed with Ganassi in the IndyCar Series. Two fifth places in both Indianapolis races were his best results. He finished the season as the third best Ganassi driver in ninth place in the overall standings.

Personal

Kimball has been married to Kathleen Thompson since 2014. The ceremony of the two was carried out by Kimball's racing driver colleague James Hinchcliffe .

Others

Because of his diabetes, Kimball needs special treatment. A blood sugar sensor is implanted in his body, which transmits the relevant information both to a display in the vehicle and to the team. To stabilize the blood sugar, Kimball gets an insulin injection during the pit stops. Insulin supplier, Novo Nordisk , is also Kimball's personal sponsor and has been the car's main sponsor for both Indy Lights and IndyCar Series.
