IndyCar Series 2014
The Verizon IndyCar Series 2014 was the 19th season of the American IndyCar Series and the 103rd season in American monoposto racing.
Rule changes
Sporting changes
The point system has been adjusted once more. For the three races of the Triple Crown , which are the only races to cover a distance of 500 miles, double points are awarded. The scoring scheme and the format for qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 have also been revised. This means that the oval races, the number of which has declined over the years, are again given greater weight this season.
Penal transfers for premature engine changes have been abolished. If an engine reaches the planned mileage of 2,500 miles, the manufacturer receives ten bonus points in the manufacturer's ranking. If the minimum mileage is not achieved, ten points are deducted from the manufacturer's rating. The manufacturer rating has been adapted to the driver rating system. If a team orders the engine change, ten points will be deducted from the driver concerned and the team. In this case the vehicle is moved to the end of the starting field. The Indianapolis 500 is an exception. Starting place penalties for this race will only be applied in the following race.
Name change
After apparel company Izod ceased title sponsorship of the series, telecommunications company Verizon Communications took over the position. The series has been called the Verizon IndyCar Series since 2014 .
Teams and drivers
All teams use the DW12 chassis, Dallara aero kits and Firestone tires .
