Reports
background
After the Honda Indy Toronto , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' championship by thirteen points over Will Power and 69 points over Ryan Hunter-Reay .
There was a change in the starting field. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing decided not to use a second vehicle for Luca Filippi and only entered one vehicle.
With Scott Dixon (four times), Castroneves (twice), Juan Pablo Montoya , Ryan Briscoe and Charlie Kimball (once each), five former winners competed in this race. A driver from Chip Ganassi Racing won six of the last seven races .
training
There were three training sessions of 45 minutes each, two on Friday and one on Saturday. In the first training session, Hunter-Reay was the fastest ahead of Simon Pagenaud and Dixon. Several drivers drove only a few laps. Pagenaud completed only six pieces. Dixon was only on the track for the last ten minutes. Only Sébastien Bourdais and Graham Rahal drove at least 20 laps. The low level of operation was triggered by fewer sets of tires. Firestone had only five sets of tires provided per vehicle instead of six sets of tires - as was previously the case at events with three training sessions.
In the second free practice there was a little more activity on the track. Bourdais posted the fastest lap. Carlos Muñoz came second, Takuma Satō third. Training was interrupted in the middle after Pagenaud got stuck in the gravel trap on corner four. After Carlos Huertas turned around shortly before the end and stopped at the last corner, the training session was stopped prematurely.
In the third free practice, Hunter-Reay again set the fastest lap. Dixon finished second ahead of Justin Wilson . Training was briefly interrupted after Sebastián Saavedra slipped in the twelfth corner.
Qualifying
Qualifying took place under wet conditions.
The first part of the qualifying was held in two groups according to the usual qualifying system for street courses. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. In the first group, Montoya drove the fastest lap, in the second group Hunter-Reay was the fastest driver. In the first group, Satō spun at the exit of the fifth corner, triggering an interruption. His best time was cut, so that he was ultimately without time. Briscoe also caused an interruption and the time was canceled. In the second group, Dixon slipped into the meadow in the ninth corner, so that qualifying was interrupted. His best time was canceled too, so that he was without time and thus finished last on the grid.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Montoya slipped in the first corner, causing an interruption. His fastest lap was canceled and he was finally in eleventh place. Bourdais posted the fastest lap time. Alongside him, Hunter-Reay, Tony Kanaan , Muñoz, Josef Newgarden and Power made it into the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six.
In the third part it was drier than before, but still so wet that the drivers used rain tires. Bourdais ended up setting the fastest time, taking pole position from Newgarden and Kanaan. With his 33rd pole position, Bourdais moved to seventh place with Dario Franchitti in the all-time list of the best .
Final training
In the final training session on Sunday morning, Bourdais was the fastest ahead of Saavedra and Hunter-Reay.
run
Castroneves had problems with the engine mapping even before the start. He started the race four laps behind and kept it until the end of the race.
There was already an accident on the first lap, which triggered a yellow phase. Kanaan was pinched by Newgarden and spun. Marco Andretti and Satō were involved in the incident. For Kanaan and Andretti, the race was over after this incident. It was the first caution period at the IndyCar race in Mid-Ohio since 2011. After the restart, Bourdais determined the initial phase. It led in front of Newgarden and Hunter-Reay. Dixon pitted twice in the initial phase and completed the necessary laps on the harder Black tire compound during this time. In the first third of the race, Saavedra retired due to a technical defect. During the first pit stop, Hunter-Reay took the lead for two laps. Then Bourdais was back in front. Hunter-Reay exceeded the speed limit in the pit lane and received a drive-through penalty for this.
Shortly after Dixon made a pit stop, Hunter-Reay spun around the twelfth corner, triggering a yellow phase. After all the other drivers had pitted, Dixon, who had started from last place, led the race. Dixon kept the lead at the restart and then managed to save fuel while still doing fast laps at the front. After the 61st lap, he pitted for his last stop. Newgarden took the lead for three laps. On his last pit stop, Newgarden missed a chance to win after running over a hose in the pit and receiving a drive-through penalty for it.
Bourdais and James Hinchcliffe briefly took the lead before Dixon led again. Dixon never gave up the lead and was in the lead for half of all laps despite starting from last place.
Dixon won for the fifth time in Mid-Ohio. It was Ganassi's first win of the 2014 season and the first since switching from Honda to Chevrolet engines. With his 34th IndyCar win, Dixon moved into the all-time leaderboard with Al Unser jr. in sixth place. It was the first time an IndyCar race in Mid-Ohio had won a driver who started outside the top eight. Bourdais finished second ahead of Hinchcliffe, Muñoz and Rahal. Power, Kimball, Briscoe, Pagenaud and Hunter-Reay.
In the drivers' championship, Power took the lead again from Castroneves and Hunter-Reay. 13 drivers still had theoretical title chances after the race.
