Joachim Gérard (born October 15, 1988 in Ukkel ) is a Belgian wheelchair tennis player .

Career

At the age of ten, Joachim Gérard fell ill with polio and has been dependent on a wheelchair ever since. He started wheelchair tennis at the age of 12 and has been in the paraplegic class ever since .

He has participated in two Paralympic Games so far . In the 2008 Summer Paralympics , he reached the round of 16 in singles. At the 2012 Summer Paralympics , he reached the quarter-finals, where he was defeated by Ronald Vink in three sets. In 2013 he reached the final of the individual competition at the Wheelchair Tennis Masters , which he lost to Shingo Kunieda . In 2014, he won his first title at the tournament in the doubles competition. With Stéphane Houdet he won the doubles competition at the 2014 French Open . In 2015 he won the final at the Wheelchair Tennis Masters against Shingo Kunieda and defended this title in 2016. He won his second Grand Slam title in 2017 at the Australian Open when he won the doubles competition with Gordon Reid .

He won the Belgian Disabled Athlete of the Year election in 2013 .
