symbolism

The official logo was designed by the Brazilian agency Tafíl Design and unveiled on November 26, 2014 as part of the lighting of the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas Christmas tree .

It combines the symbol of a heart and that for infinity, which, according to IPC President Philip Craven , should represent the "heart" of the games, the athletes, on the one hand, and their "infinite power to master obstacles" on the other.

mascot

The official mascots of the Summer Olympics and the Paralympics 2016, Tom and Vinicius, were officially presented on November 24, 2014, their names were given by a vote on December 14, 2015. Tom, the mascot of the Paralympics, is reminiscent of a tree and is supposed to symbolize the rich flora of the country. His companion Vinicius, who is modeled after a cat, represents the animal world of Brazil. According to their fictional story, they are both the product of the joy of all Brazilians at hosting the Games.
