The Marina da Glória is a marina in the Glória district , in the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil . It is located on Avenida Infante Dom Henrique .

history

The Marina da Glória was inaugurated in 1979. The port was a project by the architects Amaro Machado and the Portuguese Duarte Belo, who specializes in nautical infrastructure . For the Pan American Games in 2007, the port was refurbished, expanded and the establishment of a tourist and trade center began. The last major modernization was completed in 2016.

offer

The marina is part of the Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes ( Flamengo Park ), and is located on Guanabara Bay in the center of the city, in the immediate vicinity of the Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont airport . Yachts up to a size of 60 meters can moor here. In addition to the nautical services, the marina houses two halls for events, five restaurants, 24 shops including a diving center . After the modernization in 2016, the marina now has space for 415 boats in the water and storage space for another 240 boats on land. It also has 470 chargeable parking spaces. Private investors spent around R $ 70 million on the renovation and expansion .

Events

  • In 2007 the marina was used at the Pan American Games as the departure and arrival point for boats participating in the sailing competitions.
  • In 2011, the marina stage was the site of the 2014 FIFA World Cup draw. This was the first official event of the competition in the host country Brazil.
  • In 2016, the sailing competitions of the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics were held here.
  • In 2017 the Festival de Inverno Rio 2017 , a three-day festival as part of the Rock in Rio music festival, took place in the marina.

Water pollution

The Marina da Glória as the venue for the sailing competitions was criticized by the athletes participating in the competitions at the 2016 Olympic Games, as the water quality in Guanabara Bay is very poor. Many streams and rivers flow into Guanabara Bay, the untreated water often comes from one of the surrounding favelas and is contaminated with germs and garbage.
