The hall was built for the 2016 Summer Olympics . Construction work began in mid-July 2015 and was completed in the first quarter of 2016. The arena was opened in March 2016. The Brazilian architects Vigliecca & Associados were responsible for the construction.
During the 2016 Summer Olympics , basketball games and modern pentathlon fencing took place in the arena .
