The Caravelí Province is one of eight provinces in the Arequipa region on the Pacific coast in southern Peru . The province has an area of 13,139.86 km². At the 2017 census, 41,346 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 27,484, in 2007 35,928. The provincial administration is located in the small town of Caravelí .
Geographical location
The province of Caravelí is located 500 km south-southeast of the state capital Lima in the north-west of the Arequipa region . It extends over an approximately 212 km long stretch of coast in the WNW-OSE direction. The province extends up to almost 100 km inland to the southern flank of the Nevado Sara Sara volcano . The area has very little rainfall and has a desert landscape. Several rivers, which only carry water in the rainy season, cross the province from the mountains to the sea.
The province of Caravelí borders in the northwest with the province Nazca ( region Ica ), in the north with the provinces Lucanas , Parinacochas and Páucar del Sara Sara (all three in the region Ayacucho ) and in the east with the provinces La Unión , Condesuyos and Camaná .
Administrative division
The province of Caravelí is divided into 13 districts (distritos) . The Caravelí district is the seat of the provincial administration.
