The Caravelí district is located in the Caravelí Province in the Arequipa region in southwest Peru . The district has an area of 727.68 km². The 2017 census counted 4259 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3383, in 2007 3784. The seat of the district and provincial administration is the small town of Caravelí with 4104 inhabitants (as of 2017). Caravelí is located in the Quebrada Caravelí river valley at an altitude of 1779 m .
Geographical location
The Caravelí district is located in the central east of the Caravelí Province. It extends over the desert-like coastal highlands at the southern foot of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The district covers the central catchment area of the Quebrada Caravelí and extends up to 30 km to the sea coast.
The Caravelí district bordered to the south and west by the district Atico , on the north by the district Quicacha and on the east by the districts of Rio Grande ( province Condesuyos ) and Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel ( province Camaná ).
