The district of Cahuacho is located in the Caravelí province in the Arequipa region in southwest Peru . The district was established on February 22, 1935. It has an area of ​​1385 km². The 2017 census counted 682 residents. In 1993 the population was 830, in 2007 it was 881. The district administration is located in the 3340  m high town of Cahuacho with 187 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cahuacho is 32 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Caravelí . The area is almost entirely desert. The Quebrada Caravelí (in the upper reaches Quebrada Ocoruro) drains the central part of the district to the south. The extreme northwest lies in the catchment area of the Río Chaparra, the extreme southwest in the catchment area of ​​the Río Atico. The Río Marán , the right source of the Río Ocoña , flows southeast along the northeastern district boundary .

Geographical location

The district of Cahuacho is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the northeast of the province of Caravelí. The lengthwise extension in east-west direction is almost 50 km, the maximum width is about 35 km. In the far north, the district extends to the southern slope of the 5505  m high volcano Nevado Sara Sara .

The district of Cahuacho borders in the west on the district Quicacha , in the north on the districts Puyusca ( province Parinacochas ) and Pausa ( province Páucar del Sara Sara ), in the northeast on the district Tauría ( province La Unión ), in the east on the district Yanaquihua ( Condesuyos Province ), in the south to the Caravelí district and in the extreme southwest to the Atico district .
