The Atiquipa district is located in the Caravelí province in the Arequipa region in southwest Peru . The district was founded in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​423 km². The 2017 census counted 542 residents. In 1993 the population was 559, in 2007 it was 774. The district administration is located in the 325  m high town of Atiquipa with 121 inhabitants (as of 2017). Atiquipa is 107 km west of the provincial capital Caravelí . The area is almost entirely desert. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) runs through the district. In the far east is the archaeological site Quebrada de la vaca (Puerto Inca).

Geographical location

The Atiquipa district is centrally located on the coast of the Caravelí province. It has an approximately 25 km long coastline on the Pacific Ocean and extends up to 40 km inland. The Atiquipa district extends over the Lomas de Atiquipa range of hills, which extends to the sea. The highest point in the district is in the extreme northwest and is at an altitude of about 2700  m .

The district of Atiquipa borders in the west on the district Yauca , in the northwest on the district Jaquí , in the north on the district Pullo ( province Parinacochas ), in the northeast on the district Huanuhuanu and in the east on the district Chala .
