The Bella Unión district is located in the Caravelí province in the Arequipa region in southwest Peru . The district was established on November 24, 1955. It has an area of 1588.41 km². The 2017 census counted 3171 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1622, in 2007 it was 4296. The district administration is located in the small town of Bella Unión with 2882 inhabitants , located at an altitude of 225 m, 20 km from the sea (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The Bella Unión district is located in the west of the Caravelí province. It extends in the east to the mouth of the Río Acarí . It has almost 21 km of coastline on the Pacific Ocean and extends up to 45 km inland. The Río Acarí flows along the southeastern district boundary to the sea. Irrigated agriculture is practiced at Bella Unión. Otherwise the area consists of desert. In the north of the district rise the foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) crosses the district near the coast.
The Bella Unión district borders on the Lomas district to the west, the Marcona ( Nazca province ) and Santa Lucía ( Lucanas province ) districts to the north, and the Acarí district to the east .
