Derek Menchan

Derek Menchan is an American cellist , bassist and university professor .

Menchan studied at the Manhattan School of Music . His teachers included Laszlo Varga , Janos Starker , Olga and Mstislaw Rostropowitsch and Harvey Shapiro . He has appeared as a soloist with various orchestras and ensembles such as the Houston's OrchestraX , the Orlando Symphony Orchestra and the New York Pro Arte Ensemble , under the direction of Leonard Slatkin and Kurt Masur, among others .

He has worked with musicians such as Ray Charles , Diana Ross , Robert Plant and Jimmy Page , Stevie Wonder and Rod Stewart , with poets, painters, dancers and video artists, and as a studio musician with record producers Mike Dean and Mike Moore . In 2019 he released the album The Griot Swings the Classics .

Menchan taught at Texas Southern University until 2003, when he became Professor of Music and Humanities at Polk State College . Here he runs the Philosophy Club and is the founder and director of the People Chamber Music Series to promote talented classical musicians.
