The Lucanas Province is part of the Ayacucho administrative region in southwest Peru . It has an area of 14,495 km². The 2017 census counted 51,328 inhabitants in the province. Ten years earlier the population was 65,414. The administrative seat is in Puquio .
Geographical location
The province of Lucanas is located in the southwest of the Ayacucho region. The south-western part of the province extends over the Peruvian western cordillera , the north-eastern part over the adjacent Andean highlands . Much of the area is drained by the Río Grande , Río Acarí and Río Yauca to the southwest towards the Pacific Ocean . Only the north and northeast lie in the catchment area of the Río Pampas , a tributary of the Río Apurímac .
The province of Lucanas borders in the north on the neighboring provinces of Huanca Sancos , Víctor Fajardo and Sucre , in the east on the province Andahuaylas (region Apurímac), in the southeast on the province Parinacochas , in the west on the regions Arequipa and Ica and in the north-west on the region Huancavelica .
Administrative division
The province of Lucanas consists of 21 districts. The Puquio district is the seat of the provincial administration.
