The Lucanas District is located in the Lucanas Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​1212 km². The 2017 census counted 2897 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2815, in 2007 it was 3777. The seat of the district administration is the 3375  m high village of Lucanas with 1352 inhabitants (as of 2017). Lucanas is 14 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Puquio .

Geographical location

The Lucanas district is located in the Andean highlands north-central in the Lucanas province. The continental divide runs through the northwest of the district. The area north of it is drained via the Río Sondondo . Most of the district is drained southwards via the Río Acarí towards the Pacific Ocean .

The Lucanas district is bordered to the south by the district of San Cristóbal , in the extreme southwest of the district of Santa Lucia , in the west on the districts of Leoncio Prado , Otoca and San Pedro de Palco , to the north by the district Aucara and on the east by the districts Cabana , Carmen Salcedo , Puquio and San Juan .
