The Leoncio Prado district is located in the Lucanas Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 14, 1940. The district was named after Leoncio Prado (1853-1883), a Peruvian military who fell in the Battle of Huamachuco.
The district has an area of 1111 km². The 2017 census counted 1182 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1823, in 2007 it was 1592. The district administration is located in the 2685 m high village of Tambo Quemado with 272 inhabitants (as of 2017). Tambo Quemado is about 60 km west of the provincial capital Puquio .
Geographical location
The Leoncio Prado district is located on the southwest flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the southwest of the Lucanas province. The area is located in the catchment area of the Río Nazca . Its source rivers Río de Aja and Río Tambo Quemado cross the west and the central part of the district, while the Río Chiquimaran crosses the east.
The Leoncio Prado district is bordered to the west by the Vista Alegre , Nasca and El Ingenio districts (all three in the Nasca province ), to the north by the Otoca district , to the east by the Lucanas district and to the southeast by the Santa Lucía district .
