The district of Llauta is located in the province of Lucanas in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on April 8, 1929. It has an area of ​​494 km². The 2017 census counted 960 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1652, in 2007 it was 1372. The district administration is based in the 2667  m high village of Llauta with 177 inhabitants (as of 2017). Llauta is 100 km northwest of the provincial capital Puquio .

Geographical location

The Llauta district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the northwest of the Lucanas Province. The longitudinal extent in NW-SE direction is almost 53 km, the maximum width about 15 km. The district extends over the headwaters and the upper reaches of the Río Palpa, which flows to the southwest .

The district of Llauta borders in the southwest on the districts of Palpa and Río Grande (both in the province of Palpa ), in the northwest on the district of Huac-Huas , in the north on the district of Santiago de Quirahuara ( province of Huaytará ), in the extreme northeast on the district of Sancos ( Huanca Sancos province ) and in the southeast to the Laramate district .
