The district of San Juan is located in the province of Lucanas in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on August 29, 1921. It has an area of ​​46.9 km². The 2017 census counted 1023 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 685, in 2007 it was 1233. The seat of the district administration is the 3282  m high village of San Juan (also San Juan de Lucanas) with 508 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Juan is 9 km northwest of the provincial capital Puquio .

Geographical location

The district of San Juan is centrally located in the Andean highlands in the province of Lucanas. The Río San José, a right tributary of the Río Acarí , flows along the southwestern district boundary to the southeast.

The district of San Juan is bordered by the district of San Cristóbal to the south, by the district of Lucanas to the west and by the district of Puquio to the east .
