The Chipao district is located in the Lucanas Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district has an area of 1156 km². The 2017 census counted 2702 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3804, in 2007 it was 3965. The seat of the district administration is the 3420 m high village of Chipao with 1054 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chipao is 45 km northeast of the provincial capital Puquio .
Geographical location
The Chipao district is located in the Andean highlands in the extreme northeast of the Lucanas Province. The Río Sondondo (also Río Lucanas) has its headwaters in the extreme southwest of the district. It crosses the district initially in a northeastern direction, later in a northwestern direction and drains the area. In the north of the district rises the 5,112 m high volcano Ccahuarazo (alternative spellings: Ccarhuaraso, Carhuarazo).
The district of Chipao borders in the southwest with the district Puquio , in the west with the district Carmen Salcedo , in the extreme northwest with the district Cabana , in the north with the districts Huacaña , Morcolla , Soras and San Pedro de Larcay (all four in the province Sucre ) , to the east to the Pampachiri district ( Andahuaylas province ) and to the southeast to the Coracora district ( Parinacochas province ).
