The Coracora district is located in the Parinacochas Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​1388 km². The 2017 census counted 13,852 residents. In 1993 the population was 11,637, in 2007 14,769. The seat of the provincial and district administration is the small town of Coracora, 3175  m high, with 11,257 inhabitants (as of 2017). Coracora is located 212 km south-southeast of the regional capital Ayacucho .

Geographical location

The Coracora district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the northwest of the Parinacochas province. The continental watershed runs through the northwest of the district . The area north of it is drained via the Río Sondondo to the Río Pampas . The southwest is drained via the Río Yauca , the east via the Río Marán , the right source of the Río Ocoña , towards the Pacific . The reservoir of the Ancascocha dam is located on the western border of the district.

The Coracora district borders in the west on the districts Chaviña and Puquio (both in the province of Lucanas ), in the north on the district Chipao (also in the province Lucanas), in the northeast on the district Cotaruse ( province Aymaraes ), in the south-east on the Upahuacho district , in the extreme southeast to the Lampa district ( Páucar del Sara Sara province ) and to the south to the Chumpi district .
