The Río Yauca is an approximately 176 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the southwest of Peru in the administrative regions of Ayacucho and Arequipa .
River course
The Río Yauca rises in the Andes highlands 10 km west of Cerro Comulla ( 5147 m ) at an altitude of about 4470 m . The headwaters are in the north of the Parinacochas province (Ayacucho region). The Río Yauca initially flows mainly in a southerly direction through the mountains. It runs between river kilometers 160 and 67 along the border to the province of Lucanas further west . Lake Anascocha is located on the river at river kilometer 140. This has been dammed for irrigation purposes by the Ancascocha dam since the early 2000s. The provincial capital Coracora is about 12 km downstream, 2 km east of the river. The Río Yauca turns from river kilometer 120 towards the west-southwest. It cuts through the Peruvian Western Cordillera . From river kilometer 67, the Río Yauca flows to the southwest and finally to the south-southwest. A river section about 12 km long lies within the province of Lucanas. In its last almost 50 kilometers, the river crosses the desert coastal region of the Caravelí province (Arequipa region). About 20 km further west, the Río Acarí runs almost parallel to the lower reaches of the Río Yauca. The towns of Jaqui and Yauca are located on the lower reaches of the Río Yauca. Irrigated agriculture is practiced there. The Panamericana (national road 1S) crosses the Río Yauca 4 km above its mouth into the sea. The river usually ends in a lagoon, which is only connected to the sea when the water is strong.
Catchment area and hydrology
The Río Yauca drains an area of around 4340 km², of which 3763 km² are within the Ayacucho region. The catchment area of the Río Yauca borders in the west on that of the Río Acarí, in the north on that of the Río Pampas , in the east on that of the Río Ocoña and in the southeast on that of the Río Chala. The river system is mainly fed by precipitation that falls between January and April in the higher elevations of the catchment area. The mean discharge is 16.2 m³ / s.
