The Río Ocoña is an approx. 115 km (including Río Cotahuasi : 270 km) long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in southern Peru in the Arequipa administrative region .
River course
The Río Ocoña arises at the confluence of the Río Marán (right) and Río Cotahuasi (left) at an altitude of about 900 m . It flows through the provinces of Condesuyos and Camaná in a southerly direction. At river kilometer 111 the Río Chichas flows into the river from the left. The Río Ocoña finally flows into the sea at the settlement Ocoña , 45 km west-north-west of the provincial capital Camaná . The Panamericana Sur highway crosses the river 3.5 km above the estuary. The towns of Secocha and Urascqui lie on the river . The Río Ocoña flows through an arid, desert-like landscape. He forms on its flow path Schwemmflächen out. There are repeatedly areas of irrigated agriculture along the course of the river.
Catchment area
The catchment area covers 15,998 km². In the north it is bounded by the Cordillera Huanzo mountain range , which is part of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . In the east the catchment area borders on that of the Río Camaná . In the west of the catchment area of the Río Ocoña lies the Sara Sara volcano ( 5505 m ), in the east the Solimana ( 6093 m ) and Coropuna ( 6425 m ) volcanoes . In the extreme northeast on Mount Waytani ( 5430 m ) lies the headwaters of the Río Cotahuasi , the main source of the Río Ocoña.
ecology
The catchment area of the source river Río Cotahuasi lies almost entirely within the reserve Reserva paisajística Subcuenca del Cotahuasi . In the Río Ocoña there is the shrimp species Cryphiops caementarius from the family of rock and partner shrimp (Palaemonidae). The shrimp fishery is an important economic factor for the local population. There are plans for a hydropower plant in the catchment area of the Río Ocoña, which threatens the shrimp stocks on the lower reaches of the river.
