Phyllis Omido (* 1978 ) is a Kenyan environmental activist and writer.

Life

Omido studied business administration. She first worked in the administration of a recycling plant in Owino Uhuru , a slum in Mombasa. Their son was born around 2009 and was soon to be diagnosed with lead poisoning.

Environmental commitment

Omido began her environmental commitment with the knowledge of a disease-causing effect of her breast milk on her child, caused by her work; thereupon she called together other women with the same fate and fought for the closure of a metal hut in Mombasa, the exhaust fumes of which led to the pollution of the surrounding area. In 2015 she was awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize for her commitment .
