Camaná is a coastal city in Arequipa in Peru and the capital of the Camaná province of the same name . The city had 13,364 inhabitants at the 2017 census, 10 years earlier it was 14,642. It is located about 173 kilometers southeast of the regional capital Arequipa . The city lies in the estuary of the Río Camaná , which flows into the sea 4 km further west.

The city is particularly known for its white beaches, which makes it a popular destination for tourists. The Río Camaná flows into the Pacific Ocean near the city .

history

Camaná was founded in 1539 under the name Villa Hermosa de Camaná .

In June 2001, the city's infrastructure suffered enormous damage as a result of a severe earthquake off the Peruvian coast with a magnitude of around 8.0 on the Richter scale and the subsequent tsunami, at least one person died and over 11,845 houses were built in Arequipa, Islay and Camaná destroyed. As a result, the number of tourists fell sharply for some time. In June 2010 there was another quake off the Peruvian coast with a magnitude of 4.7.
