Río Majes

The Río Camaná is a river in the south of Peru in the Arequipa region . In its upper reaches it bears the name Río Colca and in the middle it is called Río Majes .

River course

The river has a length of about 388 km and it has its source in the Cordillera Volcánica of the Andes high mountains. In the upper reaches, after Chivay , it passes the Colca Cañon , one of the largest gorges on earth. From there it flows in a south-westerly direction and finally flows into the Pacific Ocean at Camaná . The Río Ocoña runs further west .

During the rainy season in the summer months from November to March, it has a multiple of the normal amount of water.

The cactus species Armatocereus riomajensis is named after the Río Majes, in whose valley it is widespread.

ecology

The shrimp species Cryphiops caementarius from the family of rock and partner shrimp (Palaemonidae) occurs in the Río Camaná .
