The Río Acarí is a 215 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the southwest of Peru in the administrative regions of Ayacucho and Arequipa .

River course

The Río Acarí rises in the Andes highlands north of the lake Laguna Huancaccocha at an altitude of about 4400  m . The catchment area of the Río Acarí above river kilometer 65 lies within the province of Lucanas (region Ayacucho), while the river in the lower reaches crosses the province of Caravelí (region Arequipa). The Río Acarí flows mainly in a southerly direction and cuts through the Peruvian Western Cordillera . On the upper sections of the river, the river is named Río Intoncca , Río Iruro and Río San José . At river km 157, the village of Lucanas is 2 km north of the river. The most important tributary is the Río Chilques , which flows into the Río Acarí from the left at river kilometer 136, 9 km south-southwest of the city of Puquío . In the lower reaches of the Río Acarí flows through the desert coastal region. 30 km above the mouth, the river passes the village of the same name Acarí . The Panamericana (national road 1S) crosses the river about 4 km above the mouth . This ends in a lagoon, which is cut off from the sea by a sandbank when there is little water.

Catchment area and hydrology

The Río Acarí drains an area of ​​4299 km². The catchment area of ​​the Río Acarí borders in the northwest on that of the Río Grande , in the north on that of the Río Pampas and in the southeast on that of the Río Yauca . The river system is mainly fed by precipitation that falls between January and April in the higher elevations of the catchment area. The mean discharge is 19 m³ / s.

biology

Four species of fish have been found in the river system of the Río Acarí. The trichomycteridae -Art Trichomycterus punctulatus , Basilichthys Archaeous , a representative of the New World silversides , who introduced Guppy ( Poecilia reticulata ) and occurring at the mouth of Flathead Gray Mullet ( Mugil cephalus ).
