The Río Pampas is an approx. 425 km (including source rivers: 445 km) long left tributary of the Río Apurímac in the Andean highlands of Peru . It flows through the regions of Huancavelica and Ayacucho . On the lower 200 kilometers, below the confluence of the Río Chicha , it forms the border between Ayacucho in the north and the Apurímac region in the south.

River course

The Río Pampas forms the outflow of the 4454  m high lake Laguna Choclococha . The lake is located in the provinces of Castrovirreyna and Huaytará of the Huancavelica region. A dam increases the storage volume of the lake and regulates the outflow. The Río Pampas initially flows almost 200 km in a predominantly east-southeast direction through the Andean highlands to the confluence of the Río Sondondo from the south. On this section of the river it includes the larger tributaries Río Palmitos, Río Huacuya and Río Vischongo from the left and the Río Chalhuamayo and Río Caracha from the right. It passes the communities of Pilpichaca, Paras and Vilcanchos and the small town of Cangallo . The Río Pampas then turns north for the next 130 km to the confluence of the Río Torobamba . It takes on the larger tributaries Río Pulcay and Río Chicha from the right and Río Cullay from the left on this section of the river. In the lower reaches of the Río Pampas flows in an east-southeast direction. The Peruvian Central Cordillera runs north along the river. The Río Pampas still takes on the right tributaries Río Chacabamba, Río Chumbao and Río Pincos before it meets the Río Apurímac, which flows to the northwest.

Catchment area and hydrology

The catchment area of the Río Pampas has an area of 23,236.37 km². At the Marcelino Cerna gauge, about 138 km above the mouth of the road bridge over the Río Pampas at an altitude of 2032  m , an average discharge of 152.2 m³ / s was measured in the period 1965–2009. February is the month with the highest discharge with 426.7 m³ / s, in August the average discharge is only 39.46 m³ / s.
