The Cordillera Central or Peruvian Central Cordillera is a chain of mountain ranges in the central Andes of Peru . It should not be confused with the eponymous section of the Peruvian Western Cordillera .

location

The Cordillera Central stretches in a north-south direction for almost the entire length of the country for 1630 kilometers, from the border with Ecuador in the north to west of Lake Titicaca , where it meets the Western Cordillera. The northern continuation is the Ecuadorian Cordillera Real .

There are few glaciated mountain massifs in the mountain range. The highest point of the Cordillera Central is the Nevado Salcantay with 6264  m .

From north to south, the Peruvian Central Cordillera is divided into the following sections (the highest peak in each case in brackets):

Rivers

The Río Chinchipe runs west of the Cordillera del Cóndor. The Río Marañón cuts through the mountain range in the breakthrough valley Pongo Rentema . In the upper reaches, the Río Marañón separates the Central Cordillera from the Western Cordillera. The Río Huallaga separates the Central Cordillera from the Eastern Cordillera in the middle reaches . To the east of Huánuco , the Río Huallaga cuts through the Central Cordillera. Further south is a plateau with Lake Junín . The Río Mantaro runs in the upper reaches along the western flank of the Central Cordillera, before breaking through the mountain range in the middle reaches. Further south, the Río Apurímac and Río Urubamba cut through the mountains.

Cities

There are several cities in the mountain range: Chachapoyas , Cerro de Pasco , Huánuco , Tarma , Huancavelica and Ayacucho .
