The Cordillera Vilcabamba (also Cordillera de Vilcabamba ) is a mountain range in the Peruvian Central Cordillera of the Andes .

The Cordillera Vilcabamba is located in south-central Peru in the regions of Cusco and Junín , northwest of the regional capital Cusco . The approximately 260 km long mountain range runs in the southern section in an east-west direction, in the lower northern section in a NNW-SSE direction. The river valley of the Río Apurímac forms the boundary of the mountains to the south and west. The Río Urubamba separates the Cordillera Vilcabamba from the Cordillera Urubamba further east . In the southwest, the 85 km main part of the mountain range, the Cordillera Vilcabamba in the narrower sense, runs in an east-west direction. There lies the 6264  m high Nevado Salcantay , highest point of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, as well as the 5994  m high Nevado Sacsarayoc with its main summit Pumasillo , the second highest point of the mountain range. In the northwest, an approximately 150 km long lower mountain section runs in NNW-SSE direction. This only reaches a maximum height of 4185  m and forms the watershed between the Río Apurímac in the west and the Río Mantalo and Río Picha in the east. Only the extreme northwest of the mountain is in the Satipo province of the Junín region. In the east and northeast, the Cordillera Vilcabamba is bordered by the much lower ridges of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera . The mountain range is only partially glaciated . At the end of the 20th century, the glacier area was 173 km². Above the breakthrough valley of the Río Urubamba lies the ruined city of Machu Picchu .
