River course

The Río Mayo arises in the south of the Ecuadorian province Zamora Chinchipe at the confluence of the Río Palanda and Río Numbala . It flows south through the Ecuadorian Cordillera Real . At river kilometer 133 the Río Isimanchi meets the Río Mayo on the right. At river kilometer 114 the Río Canchis flows into the river on the right side. From now on this is called Río Chinchipe . This now turns to the southeast and forms the border between Ecuador and Peru for a distance of 10 kilometers. The Río Chinchipe maintains its course and crosses the Peruvian provinces of San Ignacio and Jaén . He takes the tributaries Río Chirinos from the left and Río Tabaconas and Río Shumba from the right. There are several small towns along the river, including Chuchuhuasi and Huallape . Finally, the Río Chinchipe flows into the Río Marañón 35 km northeast of the city of Jaén .

The Río Mayo / Río Chinchipe is a popular body of water for white water activities such as rafting or kayaking , which can be done all year round.
