The province of San Ignacio is located in the Cajamarca region in the far north of Peru . The province has an area of ​​4990 km². At the 2017 census, 130,620 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 112,526, in 2007 131,239. In the west of the province is the Tabaconas Namballe national reserve. The administrative seat of the province is the small town of San Ignacio de la Frontera .

Geographical location

The province of San Ignacio is located in the far north of the Cajamarca region. The province extends over the mountainous region between the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the west and the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the east. The 3,970  m high Cerro Bravo rises in the southwest . The Río Chinchipe , a left tributary of the Río Marañón , flows through the province in a south-southeast direction and drains it in the process. Its tributaries Río Tabaconas and Río Chirinos flow through the southwest and northeast of the province.

The province of San Ignacio borders in the north on the Ecuadorian province Zamora Chinchipe , in the east on the province Bagua ( region Amazonas ), in the south on the province Jaén and in the west on the province Huancabamba ( region Piura ).
