The Contumazá Province is located in the Cajamarca region in northwestern Peru . The province has an area of 2070.33 km². In the 2017 census, 27,693 people lived in the province. Ten years earlier, the population was 31,369. The administrative seat is the small town of Contumazá .
Geographical location
The province of Contumazá is located in the extreme southwest of the Cajamarca region, about 35 km southwest of the regional capital Cajamarca . The province is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera . It has a lengthwise extension in west-east direction of 80 km. The Chicama River runs a short distance along the southern provincial border. The Jequetepeque River runs along the northern provincial border. In the west of the province lies the Gallito Ciego dam .
The province of Contumazá borders the provinces of San Miguel and San Pablo to the north, the province of Cajamarca to the east, the provinces Gran Chimú and Ascope (both in the La Libertad region ) to the south and the provinces Pacasmayo and Chepén (also both in the La Libertad region).
