The province of San Marcos is located in the Cajamarca region in northwestern Peru . The province has an area of 1362.32 km². In the 2017 census, 48,103 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 48,632, in 2007 51,031. The administrative seat is the small town of San Marcos .
Geographical location
The province of San Marcos is located in the southeast of the Cajamarca region, about 45 km east-southeast of the regional capital Cajamarca . The province lies east of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The Río Marañón flows along the eastern provincial border . The province has a longitudinal extent in the WSW-ONO direction of about 40 km and a width of about 30 km. The Río Crisnegas and its left source river, the Río Cajamarca , run along the southern provincial border and drain the area to the east.
The province of San Marcos borders on the province of Celendín in the north, on the province of Bolívar (region La Libertad ) in the east, on the province of Cajabamba in the south and on the province of Cajamarca in the west .

The province of San Marcos is divided into the following seven districts. The Pedro Gálvez district is the seat of the provincial administration.
