The region of Cajamarca [ kaxaˈmaɾka ] ( Spanish Región Cajamarca , Cajamarca-Quechua Kashamarka shuyu ) is a region in the north of the Peruvian Andes. The capital is Cajamarca . In the north the region borders on Ecuador .

Geography and climate

The Cajamarca region covers an area of ​​33,317 km². In the south of the Cajamarca region, the high Andes predominate, in the north they merge into hot tropical rainforest. history

"Cuarto del Rescate" - the room in which Inca Atahualpa was imprisoned and which was filled with gold and silver.

Probably the oldest ceramics that were made in Peru were produced by the Cajamarca culture and thus come from this region.

After the conquest by the Wari people, Cajamarca became an important administrative center. The Inca also made Cajamarca a regional capital.

In 1532 the Inca ruler Atahualpa was captured in the Plaza of Cajamarca by the Spaniard Francisco Pizarro and his army . As a ransom Atahualpa offered to fill one room with gold and two neighboring rooms with silver. Pizarro agreed to this, but then had him executed despite payment.
