The region Huánuco [ ˈwanuko ] (Spanish. Región Huánuco , Departamento de Huánuco , Quechua Wanuku suyu ) is an administrative region in Peru . It is located in the Andes of central Peru. In 2015, 860,500 people lived in an area of 36,848.85 km². The administrative seat is the city of Huánuco .
geography
The glaciated mountain group Huayhuash in the Peruvian Western Cordillera is located in the far west of the region. Its highest mountain is the Yerupajá , with 6632 meters the second highest mountain in Peru. The upper catchment area of the Río Marañón extends over the west of Huánuco. The Río Huallaga flows through the central part of the region in a northerly direction and passes through the capital. The province of Puerto Inca in the east is drained by the Río Pachitea , a tributary of the Río Ucayali .
