The Huamalíes Province is one of eleven provinces in the Huánuco region in central Peru . The province has an area of 3145 km². In the 2017 census, 52,039 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 56,119, in 2007 66,450. The provincial administration is located in the small town of Llata .
Geographical location
The province of Huamalíes is located in the west of the Huánuco region. It extends over the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The upper reaches of the Río Marañón crosses the western part of the province in a northerly direction. The province has a maximum longitudinal extent in WNW-OSE direction of about 115 km. The Río Monzón , a left tributary of the Río Huallaga , flows through the eastern part of the province in an easterly direction.
The province of Huamalíes borders in the north on the province Huacaybamba , in the east on the province Leoncio Prado , in the south on the province Dos de Mayo and in the west on the region Ancash .
Administrative division
The province of Huamalíes is divided into eleven districts (distritos) . The Llata district is the seat of the provincial administration.
