The Lauricocha Province is a province in the central Andean highlands of Peru . It is one of eleven provinces in the Huánuco administrative region . The province covers a total area of ​​1880.13 km². The population was 18,913 in 2017. The administrative seat is the small town of Jesús .

Geographical location

The Lauricocha province extends over the headwaters of the Río Marañón , left headwaters of the Amazon . Its headwaters, the Río Nupe in the west and the Río Lauricocha in the east and south, drain the area. In the west rises the Cordillera Huayhuash , a glaciated section of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . In the east rises the Peruvian Central Cordillera , which forms the watershed to the Río Huallaga , which runs further east .

The province of Lauricocha borders within the Huánuco region in the north on the provinces Dos de Mayo and the Yarowilca and in the east on the provinces Huánuco and Ambo . In the south lies the administrative region Pasco , in the west the administrative regions Lima and Ancash .

The Lauricocha Province is divided into seven districts. The district of Jesús is the seat of the provincial administration.
