The province of Pachitea is one of eleven provinces in the Huánuco region in central Peru . The province has an area of 2630 km². At the 2017 census, 49,159 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 46,162, in 2007 60,321. The provincial administration is located in the small town of Panao .
Geographical location
The province of Pachitea is located about 250 km north-northeast of the state capital Lima . The province of Pachitea has a maximum longitudinal extent in SSW-NNE direction of about 125 km. It extends in the south of the province along the eastern flank of the Cordillera Huaguruncho , a mountain range of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The Río Huallaga forms the northwestern provincial border. The south of the province is drained to the Río Pozuzo to the east. In the west lies the river valley of the Río Panao , which flows into the Río Huallaga. The northern part of the province lies in the Cordillera Azul , which is part of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera .
The province of Pachitea borders in the north on the province Huánuco , in the northeast on the province Puerto Inca , in the southeast on the province Oxapampa ( region Pasco ), in the south on the province Pasco and in the west on the province Ambo .
Administrative division
The province of Pachitea is divided into four districts (distritos) . The district of Panao is the seat of the provincial administration.
