The province of Marañón is one of eleven provinces in the department of Huánuco in central Peru . The province has an area of 4802 km². In the 2017 census, the population was 26,622. The capital of the province is Huacrachuco .
Geographical location
The province of Marañón is located in the northwest of the Huánuco region. The province stretches between the Río Marañón in the west and Río Huallaga in the east. Both rivers form the provincial border over a length of just over 40 km. In between rise the mountains of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The province extends over the river valley of the Río Huacrachuco in the west and the valleys of the Río Chontayacu and Río Yanajanca in the east. The river Magdalena forms the border in the southeast of the province.
The province of Marañón borders the Ancash region to the west, the La Libertad region to the northwest , and the San Martín region to the north and east . In the southwest, the Marañón province borders the Huacaybamba province within the Huánuco region and the Leoncio Prado province in the southeast .
