The district of Cholón is located in the province of Marañón in the department of Huánuco in central Peru . The district was established on October 21, 1912. It has an area of 2202 km². In 2017 the population was 5372. The administrative seat of the district is the town of San Pedro de Chonta with 679 inhabitants at an altitude of 2350 m (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The district of Cholón is located in the north and northeast of the province of Marañón. The district includes the upper catchment area of the Río Chontayacu , left tributary of the Río Huallaga . In the west the watershed of the Peruvian Central Cordillera forms the district boundary , in the east the district extends to the Río Huallaga. A road runs along the course of the Río Chontayacu and connects the district with the city of Uchiza further east .
State of emergency 2011
On September 14, 2011, the Peruvian government declared a 60-day state of emergency in the district due to criminal activities by former members of the Sendero Luminoso (“Shining Path”) organization in the region.
