Jan Albertsz. van Dam (around 1720)

Jan Albertsz. van Dam (* around 1672 in Hoorn , Netherlands ; † February 10, 1746 ibid) was a Dutch mathematician , astronomer (he calculated almanacs), surveyor , teacher and poet .

Life

Jan Albertsz. van Dam was a relative and apprentice of Dirck Rembrantsz van Nierop , whose books he also edited. He took over a boarding school in Hoorn from his father, where nautical science was taught. After the death of his uncle Pieter Rembrantsz van Nierop in 1708 he was one of his heirs and continued his work on almanacs (and continued to publish his old almanacs). In the beginning these were just calendars, but soon contained a lot of practical information such as dates of trade fairs, tide tables, moonrising and moonrising, as well as puzzles, poems, medical and astrological matters. The topics varied depending on the target customers. It then received an official permit in 1709, which was later renewed, but could not fully protect it from plagiarism. From 1730 he was examiner of the Chamber of Hoorn for helmsmen (navigation officers) of the East India Company.

In 1697 he taught at the recommendation of Nicolaes Witsen Tsar Peter the Great in mathematics and nautical when he was in Amsterdam. The tsar visited him again in Hoorn in 1717.

He was a Mennonite preacher.
