Geography and traffic

The city lies on a headland on the Markermeer . The water areas belonging to the urban area take up a larger proportion of the urban area than the land area.

Hoorn is a popular port for excursions on the Markermeer. From Hoorn station there are connections to Amsterdam, Alkmaar and Enkhuizen as well as a museum railway to Medemblik ( Museumstoomtram Hoorn – Medemblik ). In summer, trains pulled by a steam locomotive run here .

history

Hoorn was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century. Older forms of the name are Hoern or Hoirne . The origin of the name of the city is not clear: There are several derivations of the name, such as from the stepson Hornus of King Radbod , the horn-like shape of the first port of the city or according to a notice board with a postal unicorn (see coat of arms) on a building on Roode Steen in the 14th century.

After the founding of the United East India Company in 1602, which had one of its headquarters in Hoorn, Hoorn grew into a port city of international importance. Many sailors and explorers came from Hoorn, for example the Dutch Willem Cornelisz Schouten and Jakob Le Maire .

The earlier importance of the city as a port square is shown in the naming of the southernmost point of South America with the name Cape Horn after Schouten's place of birth.

When trade declined due to competition from Amsterdam and England , Hoorn remained a fishing port and market town of regional importance.

Buildings, culture, monuments

The city has many historical monuments, including the town hall, the Hoofdtoren (main tower in the harbor), the city scales from 1609, the city gate Oosterpoort (east gate), some churches (for example the Oosterkerk ) and many houses from the 17th and 18th centuries.

There are several museums ( Museum van de 20e Eeuw (Museum of the 20th Century), Westfries Museum (Museum of West Friesland), Steam Tram Museum and the Prison and Arms Museum), the Park-Theater Schouwburg Het Park and a statue of Jan Pieterszoon Coen ( 1587–1629), Governor General of the Dutch East India Company .
