Haarlemmermeer is a municipality in the Dutch province of North Holland with 154,461 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019) and was the name of a huge body of water before it was drained.

geography

The municipality is located a little southeast of Haarlem and southwest of Amsterdam . It covers the area of the lake of the same name, which was drained from 1848 to 1852. From him there was a danger of flooding for Amsterdam and Haarlem. The Cruquius pumping station, used for drainage, is now an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Culture (ERIH) and can be viewed as a museum.

The Haarlemmermeer consists of several places, the largest of which is Hoofddorp .

Economy and development

The economic, official and cultural center of the municipality is also located in Hoofddorp. Nieuw-Vennep is also important. Both places have a train station on the Schiphol - Leiden - The Hague railway line .

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol , the international airport of Amsterdam , also belongs to the municipality . Thanks to the airport, many transport, logistics and other companies have settled in the community. The downside of this is that crime and terrorism are an increased risk for the community. In 2005, for example, there was a fire in a wooden emergency building at Schiphol Airport that served as a prison, killing eleven people. There was a dispute between the community and the government over whether the complex should be closed for good. In December 2005 the government enforced that the institution remains open for the time being. A building near the airport, where drug smugglers, illegal people and others can be held in temporary detention, is essential for national security.

In 2002 the international garden show Floriade took place in Haarlemmermeer . Part of this area, especially around the striking grass pyramid, is used every year by the Mystery Land music festival .

history

Map of the development of the Haarlemmermeer

Haarlemmermeer is a polder in the southwest of Amsterdam. In the Middle Ages there were four lakes: the Spieringmeer in the north, the Oude Meer in the east, the (old) Haarlemmermeer in the middle and the Leidsemeer in the south. Due to poor dykes and peat mining, more and more land disappeared, the lakes grew together around 1500 and formed the (new) Haarlemmermeer, the largest lake in the Netherlands with an area of 17,000 hectares. The three villages of Nieuwerkerk, Rijk and Vijfhuizen were also lost. Because of its unpredictability, the lake was nicknamed the water wolf .

As early as the 17th century , plans were made by Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater , among others, to drain the Haarlemmermeer. This should require 200 wind pumps . Drainage did not take place given the high cost and needs of shipping and fishing.

In 1836 two huge storms drove the water to the gates of Amsterdam and Leiden. Then King Wilhelm I of the Netherlands decided to drain the Haarlemmermeer. By resolution of August 1, 1837, a commission was charged with drafting plans. However, their implementation only got underway in 1839 , after Amsterdam and Leiden had to fight again with floods.

Drainage

In May 1840 the Junker Van der Poll broke ground for the circular canal and the dyke construction near Hillegom . After eight years, the ring dike with a length of 59.50 kilometers and 0.50 to 1.70 m in height was closed. In the meantime it had been decided to use steam engines to dry the lake . In 1845 a test pumping station was built for this, the Leeghwater pumping station . In 1849 two more pumping stations went into operation, the Cruquius and Lynden works . On July 1, 1852, the Haarlemmermeer was dry. The 20 kilometer long Hoofdvaart (Canal) connects Lijnden in the north with Leeghwater in the south of the polder. The Cruquius pumping station near Heemstede was decommissioned in 1931 and has been a museum ever since. A new pumping station, De Bolstra , was built near Aalsmeer . It was not until 1855 that Haarlemmermeer became a municipality.
