history

The area of Larens was already inhabited in prehistoric times, among others by bearers of the bell beaker culture . In the Middle Ages, today's village was built around a "narrow" ( Anger ) where the communal cattle were kept. The tradition of a St. John's pilgrimage , which is still going on, was also established around June 24 at the St. John's Basilica (St. Jansbasiliek). Until around 1880, Laren was a poor farming village whose inhabitants found it difficult to make ends meet as shepherds or small farmers.

After the social change and the associated urban development changes in Oosterbeek , the artists of the Oosterbeek School started looking for a new place of work. The place Laren was discovered by Jozef Israëls and by his son. In the Pulchri Studio one became aware of this place through his stories and pictures. Other artists followed such as u. a. Albert Neuhys, Anton Mauve, Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch, Willem Roelofs and Wally Moes. Max Liebermann came from Germany . The style can be attributed to that of the Hague School . Here one turned to landscape painting and the genre . In terms of art history, one also speaks of the Laren School , because a style that was only characteristic of this area had developed here, which was tied to the pictorial genres possible here.

Around 1898 there were again young artists who are assigned to the 2nd generation of the Laren School. One part remained associated with the Hague School in terms of style, while the other part had opened up to the modern age. Adrianus Johannes Zwart (d. 1981) is seen after his early work as one of the last representatives of the Hague or Laren School, which came to an end.

The American art collector and painter William Henry Singer settled in Laren in 1901. His villa, built in 1911, became the later Singer Museum at the wishes of the widow after structural changes . It was opened in 1956 and has a high place in the Dutch museum culture of impressionism and modernism . In addition to the usual exhibitions, there are also temporary exhibitions.
