Stede Broec ( listen ? / I ) ( West Frisian Steê Broek ) is a Dutch municipality in the province of North Holland . Audio file / audio sample

Name and places

Stede Broec was named in 1979 after the former "City of Broek" from the Middle Ages . The municipality consists of three villages, which have now grown together to some extent due to the new construction district: Grootebroek , Lutjebroek (which means small bog ) and Bovenkarspel , where the municipal administration is based.

Location and economy

The municipality is located between Hoorn and Enkhuizen , immediately west of this last town and not far from the IJsselmeer , which cannot be reached by ship from here. Grootebroek and Bovenkarspel have small stations on the Amsterdam – Hoorn – Enkhuizen railway line.

Half of the population commutes to work in Amsterdam , Hoorn or Enkhuizen . But agriculture and horticulture, especially flower growing, are also very important. There is an auction building for flowers and other horticultural products in Bovenkarspel . Every year in February, a fair with an exhibition, also worth seeing for tourists, is held here, the Westfriese Flora.

history

The first permanent settlements emerged in the 12th century, the inhabitants of which converted to Christianity very late, namely in the 13th century . The "Stede Broek" (Grootebroek) received town and market rights in 1364 . Since the population was repeatedly unhappy in the party election in the dispute between the " Hoeken and Codfish ", Broek never developed into the right city. B. temporarily drawn in a few times; Broek had a rifle guild but was never walled. The residents remained farmers or fishermen.

In the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, the place was relatively wealthy. In 1671, a brick road through Broek was even completed. It was a land connection between the then important trading cities of Hoorn and Enkhuizen. Grootebroek's heyday was over. Fires, bad harvests, floods and epidemics plagued the place.

The situation only improved in the 20th century when horticulture emerged. In February 1999, the horticulture and consumer fair "West Friese Flora" broke out among visitors in Bovenkarspel an epidemic of legionellosis or Legionnaires' disease from. One of the exhibitors had put a whirlpool on display , which (as it turned out later) was infected with the bacterium Legionella pneumophila . Tiny water droplets from the device contaminated the visitors to the fair. Of the 230 visitors suffering from legionnaires' disease, 32 died of it. This disaster prompted the Dutch Ministry of Health to adopt strict safety measures for the hygiene of water pipes .
