geography

The community is located on the North Sea , at the mouth of the North Sea Canal . In IJmuiden are the locks that close the North Sea Canal with four lock chambers against the North Sea and there is also a lighthouse in IJmuiden .

The municipality of Velsen consists of the districts Driehuis, Santpoort-Noord, Santpoort-Zuid, Velsen-Noord, Velsen-Zuid, Spaarndammerpolder, Velserbroek and IJmuiden .

history

In Roman times there was a fortified port facility called Flevum ( Felisan ) in the area of ​​Velsen .

Until the 19th century, Velsen and IJmuiden were pretty insignificant.

The economic boom of the municipality began in 1871 after the opening of the North Sea Canal , when IJmuiden became the seaport of Amsterdam and many industrial companies settled there for this reason. At the time of the German occupation 1940-1945 IJmuiden was expanded by the Organization Todt on behalf of the Wehrmacht to the fortress IJmuiden as part of the Atlantic Wall . Numerous bunkers still bear witness to this today.

economy

IJmuiden has a large fishing fleet and is the main port of entry for sea ​​fish in the Netherlands. That is why the fish processing industry is very important in this region. The port of IJmuiden is also important as a base for suppliers who supply the drilling rigs in the North Sea with material from here. In addition, there is a daily boat connection with the ferries “ Princess Seaways ” and “ King Seaways ” of the Danish shipping company DFDS Seaways to Newcastle in England .

The large industrial area of ​​the "Hoogovens" blast furnace is located near Velsen . This aluminum and steel mill is part of the British-Dutch Corus group .

The port facilities in the municipality serve as a seaport for Amsterdam . The Amsterdam level is measured in IJmuiden and is the reference point for all altitude information in Germany.
